Palliative Care Sensitization Campaign - New Delhi, India 
A day long seminar and campaign on 10th October 2009 for sensitizing the masses on the efficacy of Palliative Care to be attended by eminent Palliative experts, followed with a public meeting in the evening by ensuring participation of people from all walks of life in the National Capital, Delhi

On 10th October 2009 in M.P's Club, South Avenue, New Delhi - Chief Guest Mr. Oscar Fernandes, Honourable Member of Parliament inaugurated the World Day Celebrations.
 

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day on 10th October 2009 was celebrated in M.P (Member of Parliament)'s Club, South Avenue, New Delhi in the interest of all the ailing bedridden patients suffering from life limiting illnesses. The program started with the welcome speech by Mr. K.V. Hamza, General Secretary DNipCare, followed with the Presidential speech by Professor Omcherry N.N. Pillai, an eminent academician and social activist in India. He highlighted the necessity of rendering Palliative Care to the poor and forsaken patients around us who are unable to even a square meal a day.

Distinguished Guests and audience on thought provoking Palliative Care Discourse

Mr. Oscar Fernandes, a prominent Member of Parliament and also former Minister, Union of India inaugurated the World Hospice & Palliative Care Day Celebrations. He expressed his concern for the bedridden patients with life limiting illnesses and also offered to render Palliative Care services to them by becoming a volunteer of DNipCare whenever possible. Dr. Christi Fernandez, IAS, Secretary to the President of India applauded the organization for taking up the cause of Palliative Care and stressed the point that it is the utmost necessity of the time. He has also announced a one time grant of Rs.25,000/- from the President of India's funds to DNipCare for rendering Palliative Care. Dr. C.V. Anand Bose, IAS and Managing Director, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India through his thought provoking speech sensitized the audience on the efficacy of Hospice and Palliative Care for the ailing patients.

Then the Palliative Care experts from famous hospitals took over the dais. Dr. Sushma Bhatnagar, Associate Professor, Dr.B.R.A.R.Cancer Hospital, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, Dr. Manoj Sharma, Associate Professor, Radiotherapy and Cancer, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, Dr. K.S. Manoj from St. Stephens Hospital and Dr. Suresh K Mohammed from National Aids Control Organization discussed the Hospice and Palliative Care in detail in the interactive session with the volunteers, patients and their relatives and the common public. The patients also raised many questions pertinent to the Cancer, Palliative Care etc.

 

Palliative Care Awareness Campaign - Experts interacting with audience comprising volunteers, Patients & relatives

Thereafter a documentary viz., Athijeevana' ie., ‘An Unarmed Battle' on the single man crusade of Mr. Kunhachan for bringing the leprosy patients and leprosy cured people into the mainstream of society was screened. The documentary was of 42 minutes and the audience enjoyed the World Hospice & Palliative Care Day celebrations very much. The patients felt very much involved in the program and had a wonderful experience of interaction with all the volunteers, well wishers and the dignitaries. The relatives of some of the patients attended were also very much sensitized about the efficacy of Palliative Care mission. The feedback forms received from the audience shows that their hearts have quite moved positively for rendering Palliative Care to all the hapless and ailing patients around them in the society.

 

Cultural Evening enthralled audience comprising volunteers patients and their relatives

A musical program along with Mohiniyattam, a dance form in India, by the troupe led by Padmashree Professor (Dr.) Leela Omcherry was staged for 45 minutes. It was a real feast to the hearts of all the audience including volunteers and patients.

The program ended at 8.45 PM with the tasty food refreshment for all.

DNipCare (Delhites' National Initiative in Palliative Care) is a small Palliative group started in the bustling metropolis of Delhi, India on 15th August 2008, say just more than a year ago has a volunteer base of more than 50 people from myriad fields like Government service, private employment and business, medical and paramedical professions. Coming together from all walks of life, they regularly attend the patients from all parts of Delhi. The care to the ailing patients has now been extended to the adjacent National Capital Regions like NOIDA, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Faridabad with the active support of other local socio cultural and community organizations.
