October 6th 2007: World Hospice and Palliative Care Day and Voices for Hospices: Theme: Across the Ages - From Children to Older People Evaluation of WHPCD 2007 Click here The evaluation for World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2007 clearly shows the variety of events and activities that took place around the world. Many activities were Voices for Hospices concerts. The impact of events was reported by many and these included increased patient referral and new interest from volunteers. Money was raised, awareness was heightened and people across the world celebrated the benefits palliative care brings to people and their families and carers affected by life limiting illness. |

October 7th 2006: World Hospice and Palliative Care Day: Theme: Access to care for all Evaluation of WHPCD 2006 Click here UK report Hospice and Palliative Care - Access for All For World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2006, Help the Hospices produced a report on Access issues in the UK. This report shows how hospice and palliative care services in the UK strive to meet the challenge of ensuring that everyone within communities get the services they need. Download the report World Hospice and Palliative Care Day took place on October 7th 2006. 226 events in over 60 countries were registered on the website. These events ranged from nationwide campaigns, for example the Hospice is Life Campaign which involved 85 hospices in Poland to small events by individuals such as the Fruits Day in Nigeria. Many different types of events are anticipated, including sponsored walks, exhibitions, competitions, rallies,
poetry readings, conferences, street parties and the publication of an international report into access to hospice and palliative care services.
There are currently around 8,000 hospice and palliative care services in 110 countries. The first modern hospice - which inspired the global hospice movement - was St Christopher's in London, founded in 1967 by Dame Cicely Saunders, who died on 14th July 2005, at St Christopher's.
