Tallis: Spem in Alium; Vaughan Williams Antiphon Howells Jubilate
The choir was asked to reprise Tallis' 40-part motet, Spem in Alium after the interval - a repeat of a life-time's ambition for Nick!

The Vaughan Williams Antiphon and Howells Jubilate, with which the concert opened and closed, both raised the roof with the 118 singers being accompanied by Charles Thompson on the organ. Some of the individual choirs, that had been invited to participate in the Tallis, also performed entertaining items themselves:

• New Sussex Singers - Directed by John Baker - You Are the New Day (Kings' Singers); It Was a Lover and His Lass (Rutter)
• Wimbledon Chamber Choir - Directed by Peter Smith - O Happy Eyes (Elgar)
• Saffron Walden Singers - Directed by Janet Wheeler - Alleluia! I Heard a Voice (Wheeler)
• New Voices - Directed by Tali Glynne-Jones - Ceremony of Carols - two carols (Britten) - accompanied by Susannah Shucksmith (harp)
• Cantamus Chamber Choir - Directed by Nicholas Landauer - Lay a Garland (Pearsall); Fyer! Fyer! (Morley)

We were also joined by members of the Collegiate Singers, directed by Andrew Millinger, and Antiphonia, directed by Anthony Cairns.

Alleluia! I Heard a Voice was written by SWS's director, Janet Wheeler, and it was quite an achievement to bring off convincingly. The real star choristers of the evening however, by popular acclaim, were Tali Glynne-Jones' pupils, New Voices. Their performance of the Britten was vibrant and committed, and the soloist, Natalie Jones, sang hauntingly.

The sixteen girls are aged between 12 and 16 and could compete successfully in any company. We were also treated to the Debussy Chansons de Bilitis, performed by soprano Sarah Hale and pianist Johnathon Hart. Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening - not least the conductor!
