The Hospital Palliative Care Team, HPCT has been a very recent addition to our Hospital.
We will have been in existence for two years this coming January. The service began with me as the lone nurse but now we are a small consult team with a Palliative Care Physician Dr Carol McAllum and my nursing colleague CSN Ann Gray. We have a wonderful network of Resource/Link Nurses for Palliative Care throughout our hospital that help us. We have a close relationship and are supported by our local hospice in the community.

This was the first time the event had been celebrated within the Hawke's Bay District Health Board. The Hospital Palliative Care Team was proud to join over 70 countries around the world in the celebrations.

The committee for the WHPCD with our guest speaker for the lunchtime presentation R/N Trish Watson after her speech. From left to right Jennie Arnold,Gloria Morgan,Trish Watson and Dave Odumesi.

Our lunch time event was framed around a talk by Trish Watson one of our own Hospital R/Ns. The talk was based on a personal meeting by Trish with the World Famous Palliative Care pioneer called Elisabeth Kübler Ross. Trish is quoted as saying that she felt privileged to be able to deliver a tribute to Elisabeth Kubler Ross, based on a personal meeting with her, research from the internet, and readings from selected books. EKR was a wonderful lady who left a legacy to the world with her brave pioneering and championing the concept of dying with dignity.

The Memorial chapel
is situated in the grounds of our hospital. The stained glass window is by a local artist. So it seems very appropriate to go with the words of Elisabeth Kübler Ross whose work was discussed by our guest speaker.

"People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within" - Elisabeth Kübler Ross

It was a great turnout and staff came away knowing that we are fortunate indeed to have a Palliative Service that bridges between the hospital and our community. Gloria Morgan Palliative Care CSN with the encouragement and assistance of Jennie Arnold and Dave Odumesii from the Education Centre coordinated the arrangements.

Part of the audience on the day.The feedback was very encouraging as the day was considered a resounding success and will be celebrated again in 2008.

Improving the health of Maori people throughout Hawkes Bay is a key aim of staff of Hawke's Bay District Health Board New Zealand. As well as specific kaupapa services for Maori, Hawkes Bay District Health Board is committed to providing treatment and care that is both accessible and culturally acceptable to Maori.

The Hospital Palliative Care Team for inpatients has now been established for two years. It has a close and collaborative relationship with the local Hospice and with Community Services.

It is committed to Holistic care

   It believes in Compassionate Care

This photo captures and represents the Hospital Palliative Care Teams commitment to the cultural and spiritual beliefs of our patients and families
