What we do - Our Services
Caring for life is at the centre of our philosophy at Farleigh Hospice, caring for the lives of individuals and their families who have been touched by cancer or other life limiting illnesses. It's about extra-ordinary people taking the time to improve the lives of others; about adding life to days, even when days can't be added to life. We are the sole provider of hospice care in Mid Essex and our huge range of services are offered completely free of charge. - Contact information

Each and every week, Farleigh Hospice provides vital support, totally free of charge, to around 250 local people affected by cancer and other life limiting illnesses. To fund this care, the charity relies on the generosity of the mid Essex community.
In patients' homes, in three day hospices and in the inpatient unit, Farleigh Hospice's specialist team of health care professionals provides a range of services tailored to meet the individual needs of patients and their families.

History of Farleigh Hospice
The death of Audrey Appleton from cancer in 1981 provided the catalyst for the creation of Farleigh Hospice. Her friends, Glenda Lance and Dr. Gill Collier, launched an appeal to establish hospice services in and around Chelmsford. A steering committee was formed and the charity was registered in 1982.
In March 1984 Farleigh House, 212 New London Road, was purchased and over the next three years the building was redesigned to accommodate in-patient and Day services. The building work was completed in July 1988 and in the following month the Day Hospice was opened. In September the in-patient Unit was opened, initially with 6 beds and expanding to 10 over the following year. In 1991 the hospice employed its first Community Macmillan Nurse.
It became clear that there was a need for satellite centres to serve the geographically wide community, as some patients had to travel long distances to take advantage of our services. Two Day Hospice Centres were therefore opened to better serve the local communities in outlying areas.
In order to meet the growing need for hospice services, it became clear that the Chelmsford site would not be able to sustain future requirements. Although much loved by patients, volunteers and staff, the fact that the in-patient unit was situated upstairs was always impractical. By 1997 the decision was taken to look for a new site and an appeal was launched to raise £6 million to build a new purpose built hospice.
